In terms of popular opinion, Xenogears is considered one of the most divisive video games ever. Supporters of Xenogears believe it is the best Role-Playing Game ever, with its relatively deep and well-rooted history involving politics, love, and religion, among others; detractors believe Xenogears has badly flawed game mechanics and overly pedestrian and linear gameplay, as Xenogears was notorious for its overly lengthy cut-scenes - a trait shared with the Metal Gear Solid series; though it can be proposed that Xenogears' storytelling strength may have been severely weakened if the lengthy cut-scenes were cut.

Xenogears: A Rope Of Robots

So, where were we. Oh, yes, a Square RPG. That means two vaguely pre-modern kingdoms are at war! Nobody remembers why, or indeed cares. The tide of the war was changed recently when the Ethos Church excavated ruins of an ancient civilization and repaired some hundreds-year-old humanoid robots, because that is what churches do, and everyone bought some. They hit all the buttons until they did something, and they are now fighting the war with giant robots that no one actually understands. This war is stupid.

During a period of war, an artist with a forgotten past, Fei Fong Wong, encounters a mysterious giant machine that he finds he can control, and it forever changes his life as well as the tides of war. Large conspiracies are uncovered involving mysterious soldiers and battles are fought from all sides. Soon enough, Fei is forced to make crucial decisions while dealing with not only his own past but his faith as well.

Xenogears is a turn-based RPG with a combat system that unifies the Square's Active Time Gauge feature as well as a newly created combo system. The game chronicles the adventures of a young reluctant warrior named Fei, who, after three years of residing in a small, remote farming village begins a long, tortuous quest to uncover his mysterious past. With no memory of his life before being placed in the village leader's care three years earlier, Fei makes a violent and tragic break with his peaceful life and sets out upon a journey. Along the way, not only will his own past be discovered, but he'll also unravel the mystery of the planet's past and humanity's role in relation to it.
